Syngenta Limited v. Controller of Patents and Designs

This case involved an appeal against the rejection of a divisional patent application for an agrochemical concentrate. The original rejection was based on the premise that the divisional application's claims went beyond the parent application's claims regarding a "plurality of distinct inventions". A Division Bench of the court, in a related judgment, clarified that the requirement for "plurality of inventions" should be assessed based on the entire disclosure in the patent specifications. Consequently, the High Court set aside the rejection and sent the divisional application back to the Patent Office for a new review. The Patent Office was instructed to reconsider the application in light of the Division Bench's clarifying judgment.
